Schools are being advised to revert to far flung classes at the advice of public well being advice, a union chief has said.  

Geoff Barton, basic secretary of the Association of school and faculty Leaders (ASCL), confirmed one primary faculty and one secondary faculty had closed in Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk.

He informed the BBC’s Radio 4 Today programme: “i think it is simply vital to mention that this decision was now not on the whim of a head teacher. 

“That wasn’t any person pronouncing ‘Actually, we are going to close the college because Christmas can come early’. 

“That was on public health advice and i think what we’re getting thru all of this is the national narrative, moderately rightly, that we wish to do the whole lot we can to keep young people at school.

“But at the ground – in particular spaces such as Bury St Edmunds – public health are pronouncing ‘Actually, because of the infection charges, we are recommending that children should move to remote studying’. 

“So we’re seeing a beautiful mixed picture there.”
