A Griffith man died Friday night when he drove the wrong way and crashed into a semi on the Indiana Toll Road.
Matthew J. Pulido, 25, was pronounced dead at the scene due to blunt force injuries caused by a motor vehicle accident, a release from the Lake County Coroner’s Office stated.
According a preliminary investigation by the Indiana State Police, Pulido was driving his black 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee westbound in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 90. Around the Calumet Avenue exist, Pulido’s Jeep struck a red 2004 Freightliner semi-tractor pulling a trailer head-on, police said, and Pulido was ejected from the Jeep. Both vehicles became fully engulfed in flames, but the driver of the semi was not injured, police said.
It is unclear at this time if alcohol and/or drugs played a factor in the crash, according to the Indiana State Police’s release.
The eastbound lanes of the Indiana Toll Road were closed for about five hours for crash investigation and clean-up. Troopers were assisted on-scene by Lake County Sheriff’s Department, Lake County Coroner, Hammond Fire Department and Waffco Towing.
